There is an absolute glut in the market of zombie books/film/tv/games out there so it's hard to know what's good and what's not (assuming you think anything zombie-related can be good). I remember reading this book when it was still online in chunks. I enjoyed it then so I wanted to support the author and buy a copy to re-read. I was pleasantly surprised to find that I enjoyed it as much the second time through as the first. It's a fairly standard post-apocalyptic survival story. Main character is probably a little too capable/likeable to be super realistic but it's fantasy so I cut him some slack. He makes generally smart decisions that don't always end up the best because Murphy's Law but it's not so bad that you spend the whole book being frustrated that he can't catch a break. At the same time he's not so invicible that you lose the sense of tension and fear. The character goes from being a relatively pacifist type of person to doing what it takes to survive his grim new reality while still retaining his basic humanity and goodness. I love the bit where he reflects on how in a few short months he went from hating guns to teaching his teen companion how to shoot. The characters become a family, a functional one at that, and travel Canada looking for refuge.
This is the first in the series and is a good introduction to the genre. It's written in a journal style with each entry being the main character recounting the day's events. Not everyone's favorite style but it holds up well. For a self published author (or at least I think he was considering he originally hosted the story online) it is remarkably well done.

I really enjoyed this book. Characters were developed well and it kept me interested throughout. Just purchased the sequel. If you are into the zombie apocalypse genre I recommend it.
The writing is in a journal style which takes some getting used to. The premise for me was unique as it takes place in Canada which most take place in the US. Grammar was good and I would recommend this to anyone at the current price. Sadly I will not be purchasing his follow-on book as $8 is too much for a newb writer of this genre
This is just an all around well written tale of survival. The characters act in a rational manner for the most part and the book has a realistic feel to it. Something that is missing from today's tidal wave of zombie titles.
Intending to just peak at the story, the next thing I know it 5 am, started at 10ish. Does that give ya a Hint. Rise was an awesome trip. I didn't what the story to end. It keep me engaged, entertained and on the edge from start to finish. There are a few LOL moments and WTH moments too. Over all loved the story and want more now. )
So, I have been waiting to read this book forever. Once it became available on I scooped it up. I love the story, I am a sucker for journal entry format. I thought the story was well laid out, the characters are realistic, and the story never lags while you are reading it. I would consider this to be another example of essential zombie reading.
I read this first way back when the author had it posted free-to-anyone online. I liked it so much that I purchased a copy & have just re-read it. Really a great piece of fiction set during the beginning of a zombie apocalypse. The story is told through the journal entries of a Regular Joe who finds himself caught up in the undead uprising, and has to save himself, his sister, and a few others. Well worth your time.
I was pleasantly surprised to see that part of a short review I had posted on a web-forum was quoted on the rear cover; "Pretty damned good."
Great deal. I have learned to check the number of pages in kindle books and liked that this book had almost 300. I read it all day today and really got into it. No spoilers here; it's a very creative take on the zombie genera and well written. Few grammar or spelling errors, not as much suspense as some of the other books I've read but a good story. The only reason I gave it 4 stars is that because of how it's written there just wasn't as much suspense as I like.
