The Goddaughter Rapid Reads edition by Melodie Campbell Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks
This book has serious flaws. It is several chapters too short, it is entirely too much fun to read, and it ends too soon! Read this book if you want an unusual reading experience. It will feel like getting to the end of a glorious ice cream sundae; you scrape the bottom of the bowl, satisfied and salivating, wanting more.I am one of those readers who skips around, often reading the ending first, or reading chapters backwards when I get bored or impatient with a predictable plot, or literacy density. I enjoy skipping around the pages in a book, it is my carnal reading pleasure.
I did not have the opportunity to get bored and "Rapid read" is not the right term. This book is a decadent sundae of a tale with layers of love interest, tension, character development and a topping, and heavy sprinkle of the unexpected. The author develops fast moving action, plot twists, has fun with the characters and even pokes at the reader by sending out subliminal messages for us to purchase her other novels, while we are reading this one. The writing is clever, confident, with a self deprecating humor. I hardly had time to catch my breath, and then...I was on the last (screen) page.

The Goddaughter Rapid Reads edition by Melodie Campbell Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews
Not sure how I found out about this series, but I was lucky enough to get the 3 books at the library. I would never pay $10 for something so short. The paper versions are about 135 small, double spaced pages, so I think they're really about 65 regular book pages. Took me about 30 minutes to read each one. So, keep that in mind and decide if it's worth it to you. I might consider $1.99 on kindle. A bundle for $3.99 (or less) would be more appealing.
I liked the series for what it is, basically light mobster/crime short stories to fill in some time while waiting somewhere. Because they're so short, the characters tend to be your stock mobster types with the younger generation not being as professional as the older. I liked the relationship between Gina and Pete but felt he was too quickly accepting of the difficulties of being with such a person and involved with her family. I also liked her cousin, the "lone rearranger". Another reviewer mentioned Gina being dark. She does commit crimes but more in a Robin Hood short of way. I don't think (and considering the other reviews, most wouldn't) this is dark at all.
If you want short, light fluff and like mobster family stories, you'll probably like this. If you want something deeper and more developed you won't find it here.
So I wrote one review about two books which I read back to back. That's fine for my blog, but now what to do? Because I'm already in deep water with The God Daughter, I dare not ignore her. So I'm putting the whole review up for both books. I discuss both books. I'm sure I'll get in trouble for doing so, but here goes
These are action packed, full laugh-loaded books. What makes that so amazing is that they are novellas. I've no clue how Melodie Campbell manage to stuff so much in so few pages. It's like magic. You get the full enjoyment of a novel in an hour's time. I have to think she's got something to hold over Time so it caters to her needs.
Seriously, these novellas have so much fun stuffed in them, you will swear they are full length novels, and time is just screwing with your head.
Living in New Jersey, I have come upon real mafia myself, but there is nothing like growing up in the family to truly grasp the complexity of their relationships. You'll get a great sense of what I'm talking about in these two books.
Once a young mafia stud threatened to blow my head off, right there in the middle of a traffic jam while a hundred people looked on.
So when Melodie has her characters do brainless things, I not only believe them, I'm pretty sure someone she knew did something similar to all the stupid-ass things that occur in the books.
Both books are superbly written. However, since I loved the story plot of book two more than book one, I'll give it 5 stares, and the first book 4.5 stars, rounding it up to 5, and hope it won't cause conflict in the book family. Given book two has won several awards, book one may be resentful, and since it cannot kill it's family, it might come after me.... Well, let me say the same thing I did to the mafia tough who once threatened me "Oh, for God's sakes, just do it! You're giving me a headache."
Hopefully, book one will stare at me in baffled silence for a moment, then slam his book cover on my pc and storm off rather awkwardly. (Books are clumsy when storming off.)
Clearly I'm going for my strangest review yet...because Melodie provoked my sense of humor with her crazy stories.
I really hated these stories. The main character is a criminal and being cute about getting away with everything. Not a sympathetic character - too dark.
