So, I am happy to say that out of the 350 books I have read during my kindle unlimited subscription, I stumbled upon this one by chance and decided to delve into it with zero expectations. Am I so glad that I did! I adore this book and on my way to read it for the sixth time! I don't want to ruin it with spoilers (I want you to just go in blind and completely lose yourself in these characters and their lives), but I fell in love with Malcolm Vashal. Maren is so lucky to have met him lol . I love Stephanie because she truly knows how to write a compelling, tasteful, smart romance novel. I felt like I followed Maren and Malcolm throughout their daily lives, felt their pain and struggles, and watched them fall apart before having a happily ever after. One of the best Student/Teacher/Professor romances I have ever read. It is anything you could want in an emotional tale of "forbidden" love. Stephanie is truly a joy to read and to discover. you will not be remotely disappointed.Tags : Fall Semester [Stephanie Fournet] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. Slowly one character in introduced, then slowly the other character is introduced. Then they notice each other. Then feelings start to emerge.
I loved the story but as one reviewer suggested, I too thought more should have been brought out about Student / Professor involvement . It would have been interesting.
I wasn't overly enthusiastic when I began this novel, I wasn't sure what to expect. The quality of the writing and editing drew me in. It was so refreshing to read a book that was grammatically correct and contained no spelling errors! The storyline was interesting and the characters felt real, even if I did occasionally want to tell Malcolm to man up at the beginning of the book. I enjoyed watching his character grow and heal. I don't particularly enjoy graphic sex scenes and while I'm thankful there were only a few, some things are better left to the imagination. Overall, an excellent, intelligent first novel.
This is a great romance of 2 imperfect people. Malcolm is an interesting romantic lead because he is definitely not an alpha, but he is beautifully romantic in all of his handsome awkwardness.
With 2 leads in an English department there was just the right note of passion about knowledge without the characters coming off as pretentious, or making it seem like the author wanted to show off how clever she is.
There was a great smattering of humor, and a good dose of humanity in all its messiness.
Stephanie Fournet’s vibrant characters in this intelligent, romantic novel are drawn with a painterly brush. Her deft expression gives life to complex protagonists, each on an unexpected emotional journey. Ms. Fournet evokes remarkable sentiment from life’s everyday interactions against the backdrop of an unremarkable local university. The result is entertaining, exciting and exhilarating.
When Malcolm, the once rising but now stagnant college professor feels himself unworthy of love and life itself, a new teaching assistant transfer, Maren, aspires to prove otherwise. Their travails bring us through self-scrutiny, longing, ambition, endurance, lust, headiness, grief, adoration, and desire, to name just a few of the evocative sojourns.
The author uses the Shakespearean devices of art within art, prose within prose, using poetry—both classical and original—to help the characters emote, as well as often artful text messages corresponded by characters who want to carefully consider their word choices. At times using two languages, Ms. Fournet has a compelling command of the written word and an expressive style that makes this book hard to put down.
Malcolm is a rich, complex character; and the author effectively captures his traits, persona, and demeanor. I do wish that we could see the same dimensionality in Maren, although the youth of the character certainly provides less “baggage,” which as in life, provides less interesting fodder.
Overall, Fall Semester is simultaneously jaunty and page-turning, providing an enjoyable read for consummate bookworms and leisurely readers alike.
I have read Stephanie’s newer books so now I am catching up with the rest. I decided to start at the beginning and move on to my current place in her catalogue. Needless to say I flipping loved this book. I can always count on her books for the attention to detail, emotion and humor she writes so well.
In some was Fall Semester is like your typical student/older professor trope. But it’s also very different and that is what makes it soo good. I felt a connection to Malcom and Maren immediately. Of course poor Malcom had my rapt attention and sympathies from paragraph one. To see him grow and evolve was astounding. And Maren was an amazing complement to Malcolm. She is not without her heartache and troubles but you can see where the two of them handle their issues differently. Until the end. And then they are the same. And their love of each other is their solace. Their reason to be.
If I hadn’t already been a huge fan of Stephanie Fournet, Fall Semester would have made me one from the first chapter.
I did enjoy a lot of this book. And it was worth a read. But i did end up skimming some too. I thought more drama would happen. Like the gun at school and the student/teacher aspect. There was a lot of potential for page turning entertainment. I liked the characters, but i never really connected with them. Maybe if we got more background, it would have been better. I enjoyed when Maren and Malcolm were actually together or interacting...But I seemed to have to wait for those moments, and that was somewhat disappointing. And their conversations seemed somewhat weird. Like calling the other "silly" and saying things like "come" and "I am" instead of "I'm"...just seemed very scripted and not natural.
Overall this book was free so I wasn't overly disappointed. But I wouldn't re-read it. It had a good plot and good editing(i don't remember any spelling or grammatical errors) and the writing wasn't bad either.
